About
Honeyguide Ranger Camp

Camp Accommodations

Honeyguide Ranger Camp, owned by Albatros Travel, stays close to nature and consists of 15 newly-renovated luxury rooms built in canvas on wooden decks. The tents are elevated above the ground and have private bathrooms and showers in the open air. The furnishing is quite classic and consists of a double bed or two single beds (two of the tents are suites / family rooms), chair, desk and closet.

The intimate camp accommodates 30 guests in 15 large tents constructed in canvas on a wooden deck with an en-suite bathroom (toilet and shower). Each tent has a thatched roof and its own private terrace with safari chairs, offering an intimate lounge / dining experience in your tent.

Features include: Fan, Mosquito net, Terrace/balcony (private), reading material, bottled water and homely comforts.

Camp Activities

Ranger Camp offers guests’ game drives in new open game viewing vehicles in the early morning and late afternoon/evening Late afternoon and evening drives include sunset drinks, with views of the breath-taking Yellowwood Gorge where the road twists down the escarpment between cliffs, waterfalls and forests. Larger game frequently sighted in the reserve includes elephant, rhino, lion and hippo. In between meals and drives, use your photography skills to watch and capture through your lens the game and birdlife while relaxing by the pool or during a guided walking safari through the deep bush, accompanied by an experienced, armed ranger; it can be hot work, but it’s very exciting – seeing the animals from a vehicle just doesn’t seem to compare.

Activities on site or nearby include:
●Bird watching from a newly built hide opposite a watering hole  ●Hiking and walking safaris  ●Plant life/flora and footprint tracking ●Private guided tours  ●Safaris in a private conservancy  ●Wildlife photography  ●Stargazing  ●Moonlit authentic boma dinners ●Picnic lunches  ●Bush Sundowners  ●Golf  ●Helicopter Rides

Camp Meals

The food is a highlight and it’s a communal affair, usually served outdoors at a long table, with log fires and torches to create a really authentic bush feel. Simple homemade dishes, using predominantly local produce, are plentiful and exquisitely presented. N.B. Special arrangements can be made for in-room dining or a private bush dinner. The day starts with tea or coffee and rusks served in bed – and heralded by Honeyguide’s famous dawn drumbeat – before the early morning safari drive. On your return a scrumptious breakfast follows with a choice of cereals, fruit and a traditional cooked breakfast. Lunch is a light 3-course meal, served around 2pm.

Dinner comes quite late – after a sunset game drive.. It’s another magnificent 3-course affair served either in the boma (fenced-in campfire) accompanied by the fascinating and seductive sounds of the African night or a buffet? in the main dining area on certain nights. Our chefs are well trained and able to cater for meal preferences. There is a well-stocked bar with an excellent wine selection, stored in a temperature-controlled cellar.

Features include: All meals included, selected drinks and game drive snacks.

Pre-Retreat / Post-Retreat Travel Ideas

Booking a flight to Africa is an investment in itself. I strongly recommend taking advantage of being on this incredible continent by pursuing another adventure before or after - as long as you are in Johannesburg for our departing and return transport to the reserve!

Here are some recommendations I have for activities outside of the retreat, before or after.
● Explore Cape Town (a flight south from the retreat)
● Visit Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe
● Relax on a beach in Mozambique or Zanzibar
● Stay at Giraffe Manor in Kenya
● Climb (or partially climb!) Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
● Visit the great pyramids in Egypt
● Volunteer at any of a considerably large number of wildlife rehabilitation centers (eg, Care for Wild)
